Westminster Abbey heralds the start of the Christmas season with a performance of J S Bach's magnificent Weihnachtsoratorium (Christmas Oratorio) by the Abbey Choir and leading period-instrument orchestra St James's Baroque, with soloists drawn from the ranks of the choir. Parts I, II and III of Bach's seasonal masterpiece tell the Christmas story from the Birth of Jesus to the Adoration of the Shepherds, and are preceded by Corelli's delightful Christmas Concerto.

A Ceremony of Carols
Benjamin Britten's much-loved sequence of carols for treble voices and harp forms the centrepiece of the Abbey's annual Christmas meditation. Drawing on a variety of medieval and early modern texts, each of the twelve movements is a vividly-painted miniature masterpiece. The musical performance is prefaced by a reading of The Christmas Proclamation.
